Our Verdict

Grizzl-E is an excellent hardwired charger — but it requires an electrician to install. PionPower Flex-AC is the better choice for renters, condo owners, or anyone who wants portable Level 2 charging without installation costs.

PionPower Wins

  • Zero installation cost — plug into any outlet
  • Works at home AND while travelling (portable)
  • GreenMiles rewards on every kWh
  • App-controlled scheduling for off-peak charging
  • Works on both 120V (Level 1) and 240V (Level 2) in one unit
  • Great for renters and condo owners

Grizzl-E Classic Wins

  • Slightly higher weather rating (NEMA 4X vs IP54)
  • Better for permanent home installations with dedicated 240V circuit
  • Well-established Canadian brand

If you rent, move often, or want the flexibility to charge at different locations, Flex-AC is the clear winner. If you own your home, have a dedicated garage, and want maximum weather resistance, Grizzl-E hardwired is also a solid choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an electrician for PionPower Flex-AC?

No. The PionPower Flex-AC plugs into a standard NEMA 14-50 outlet (240V) or a regular NEMA 5-15 outlet (120V). No installation or electrician required. Grizzl-E Classic requires professional hardwired installation.

Is PionPower or Grizzl-E better for renters?

PionPower Flex-AC is significantly better for renters. Because it plugs into an outlet, you do not need landlord approval for electrical work, and you can take it with you when you move. Grizzl-E requires hardwiring, which is permanent.

Which EV charger is best for Canadians?

Both PionPower and Grizzl-E are Canadian brands with CSA certification. PionPower Flex-AC is the best option for flexibility and portability. Grizzl-E is the best option for a permanent outdoor installation. Note: Quebec residents may be eligible for provincial EV charger rebates — check with Hydro-Québec.

Does PionPower Flex-AC work with Tesla?

PionPower Flex-AC uses the J1772 connector, which is compatible with all non-Tesla North American EVs. Tesla owners need a J1772-to-Tesla adapter (sold separately) or can use the included NEMA 14-50 outlet adapter with Tesla's Mobile Connector.
